Reserved Attraction – RA 5
It was the beginning of another week and as Samuel stepped into his cubicle, he noticed a nicely wrapped gift on his table. Reading the card attached to it, he realised that it was a birthday gift from Sufen. It was his special day and nobody, including himself, even remembered it. But Sufen did. It was the first time that he had received anything from his colleagues and he was really touched by Sufen's gesture. He approached her table to thank her and offered to buy her lunch. Sufen readily accepted the offer.
Seated at their usual spot, both Samuel and Sufen munched their lunch quietly. It had been quite a while since they last ate together and they had somehow become distant. As usual, Sufen was the one who broke the silence and began talking about her future plans. Looking at her ever smiling eyes, Samuel couldn't help but wondered if she was throwing hints at him when she talked about how she would juggle the responsibilities of family life and full-time job. Feeling uncomfortable with her topic, Samuel interrupted her chat with some office stuffs.
Samuel didn't feel well after lunch. He suffered an ingestion – an ingestion of the mind to be precise. Though he would very much like to have someone as thoughtful as Sufen by his side, he had his reservations. He wasn't sure if the relationship would last or have a good ending. Not wanting to prolong the feeling of uneasiness and uncertainty, Samuel decided to make clear his stand. But it wouldn't be easy to do it without hurting her and losing her as a friend. Telling it straight in her face would be out of the question so he decided to send her a message. Thus, he spent the rest of the afternoon drafting the message in-between work.
It was time to knock off when Sufen appeared at his cubicle asking if he was ready to leave. Samuel shook his head and asked her to go ahead without him. As soon as she was out of sight, Samuel took out his handphone and keyed in the message he had prepared. After he had sent it, he decided to leave for home. As he reached the station, he noticed scores of people gathering outside the station which had been closed. Somebody had fallen off the platform onto the track. As the undertakers were carrying the body out of the station, a ringtone could be heard coming from within the black bag which contained the corpse. Standing nearby was a dumbfounded Samuel. He had actually dialled Sufen's number in the hope of locating her amid the crowd, thinking that she could have been held back too. He couldn't believe his ears and dialled her number again and again the same ringtone was heard coming from the same direction.
A witness told the police that she had noticed Sufen looking intently at her handphone as if reading an important message. Then as the train approached, she was seen moving towards the track while keying feverishly on her handphone. However, she didn't stop at the yellow line, walking beyond it unknowingly and before anyone could stop her, she fell onto the path of the oncoming train.
Samuel stared blankly at Sufen's gift which was still sitting on his table. He unwrapped it to reveal a heart-shaped bottle filled with folded paper hearts. Just then an sms arrived. He couldn't believe what he saw. It was from Sufen. Feeling baffled, he opened the message which read:

The message was incomplete. Then there was another sms. Thinking that it was a continuation of the first, Samuel quickly opened it. But it wasn't what he expected. Instead it was a message from one of Sufen's family members who explained that they had decided to send out Sufen's last keyed message so as to fulfil her final wish.
Looking at the bottle, Samuel suddenly emptied its content and started counting the paper hearts. 1, 2, 3, 4............1314. Samuel realised then that the last part of Sufen's message was:
I shall be waiting for you 1314 (一生一世)
